Dixon Qualifies Sixth at Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2004) -- Following a day of persistent rain showers, racing action resumed at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway where two-time defending NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon raced to the No. 6 qualifying position with a performance of 4.564 seconds at 325.53 mph behind the wheel of his Miller Lite dragster.

Dixon, who has won the spring NHRA event at Las Vegas the past two seasons, clocked the 4.564 elapsed time on Saturday's first pass. Dixon then drove to a run of 4.697 at 303.09 on his second and final qualifying attempt.

"I'm glad that we were able to qualify in the top half of the field," Dixon said. "It really puts the crew chiefs and teams with their backs against the wall when you only have two qualifying sessions. So, we were fortunate that we got a good run in on the first hit.

"We had some mechanical troubles on the second pass and that's why the car ran slow. I feel fortunate that we had a good run that got us solidly in the field."

Dixon looks to make his third consecutive appearance in The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway winner's circle on Sunday. He will face No. 11 qualifier David Baca in the first round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (PT).

ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Summitracing.com Nationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 3, and broadcast two hours of final eliminations coverage at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 4.
