DIXON BLASTS MILLER LITE DRAGSTER TO NO. 2 POSITION AND RECORDS TOP SPEED FRIDAY AT THE STRIP
LAS VEGAS (April 15, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon enters qualifying at each NHRA event with the goal being a position in the top five of the Top Fuel division. Dixon, crew chief Dick LaHaie and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite team accomplished that goal Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the 35-time NHRA winner qualified second with a run of 4.504-seconds.
Top Fuel racing's winningest active driver blasted his Miller Lite/Ameriquest rail to top speed of the opening day of qualifying when Dixon's dragster stopped the LVMS timers in 4.504 seconds at 330.39 mph to earn a solid position in the 16-car field. It was the third 330-mph pass of the 2005 season for the Miller Lite car.
"It was trying to run hard on the first run," LaHaie said. "The track just wouldn't hold it. We just tried to race the track Friday night. We took a different approach and backed the car down instead of tuning it up. This lets us know that we can go down the track on Friday night, but now we have to run the car in the heat on Saturday afternoon.
"I'm happy that we were able to come back and get down the track on Friday night," Dixon added. "It was a very nice run."
Dixon and the Miller Lite/Lucas Oil team aim to dial in a race day setup when Top Fuel qualifying continues with sessions schedule for 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. (PT) at The Strip. Dixon is a three-time winner at the Las Vegas track.
