Johnson Jr. Saves Best For Last, Runs 4.857 to Qualify 12th at Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 30, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. and his blue Skoal RacingSM team had their backs against the wall late Saturday afternoon having not made the cut for Sunday's 16-car field at the ACDelco Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and they responded like the talented, veteran crew they are, racing to the No. 12 qualifying position on their fourth and final qualifying attempt.

Having struggled on his first three qualifying efforts, the five-time NHRA winner, and one of 13 drivers to have earned victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, blasted his Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.857 seconds at 316.52 mph to make the show in the 12th qualifying spot. There were 24 cars attempting to qualify for the 16-car field at The Strip at LVMS.

"We knew the car would run that number," Johnson said. "We encountered a few problems that we didn't expect. We have a new Goodyear tire and a new chassis here this weekend and a lot of things happened that we didn't expect. I can't say I wasn't a little bit nervous heading into that last run, but I was confident that we'd make it into the show. That was a pretty good run. Now, we have something to tune for on Sunday."

Johnson Jr., who won the spring Las Vegas race in 2001, will do battle with No. 5 qualifier Gary Scelzi in the opening round of Funny Car eliminations on Sunday, Oct. 31. Johnson is 1-2 in his career versus Scelzi, a three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion.
