Slow Start, Bernstein Eliminate Herbert At Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 28, 2001 - Every once in a while things don't go according to plan for Doug Herbert and his Snap-on Racing Top Fuel team, and this past weekend happened to be one of those.
"We just couldn't seem to get untracked," Herbert said following his first-round setback to Kenny Bernstein in the ACDelco Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was the second time in as many weeks that Bernstein beat Herbert.
Herbert began eliminations from the No. 15 position, his lowest qualifying spot in the first 23 races, after running a best of 4.707 seconds at 311.05 mph, thereby drawing No. 2 qualifier Bernstein.
"We knew we had to step on it against Bernstein," Herbert added. "The car was running pretty good until it smoked the tires (and Bernstein won with a 4.555 at 324.67 mph to a 6.170 at 145.78). I found out you don't have to be far off (on the tune-up) on one thing to make a big difference in the way the car runs. Now we have to get ready for Pomona (Calif.)."
The last time Herbert raced at Pomona he won the NHRA 50th Anniversary Nationals. This time the visit is for the season-ending Auto Club Finals, Nov. 8-11.
Herbert holds a 51-point lead over eighth-place Tony Schumacher (1171-1120) going to Pomona.
