Capps Races to First-Round Finish at Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2004) -- After continuing to produce a solid tune-up from their Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Funny Car, Ron Capps and the green Skoal RacingSM team gained a position in the NHRA Funny Car points standings Sunday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Capps, a 14-time NHRA winner, qualified in the 10th position at Las Vegas after racing to three 4.82-second passes during qualifying. The veteran driver used the second best reaction time of the opening round of eliminations to jump to the early lead over longtime rival John Force before Force earned the win light in one of the closest races of the round. Force powered to a pass of 4.787 seconds at 322.88 mph, while Capps' Chevy flopper was right behind, stopping the clocks in 4.850 at 316.15. Capps now sits 12th in the points standings.

"It was a good weekend overall," Capps said. "It's hard to hang your head when you lose to (John) Force. They're such a great team. It was a fun race because I didn't see or hear him until right near the finish line, so I knew it had to be close. We tried to run a 4.78 or 4.79 and the car just didn't react like we thought it would."

The next NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event is the 40th annual Auto Club of Southern California Finals, Nov. 11-14, at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
