CAPPS ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS IN VEGAS, MOVES TO NO. 7 IN POINTS
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2010) - Racing the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger Funny Car, Ron Capps advanced to the quarterfinal round of eliminations at the 10th annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He was then dismissed by Bob Tasca III, but moved up two spots in the point standings, to No. 7, with one event remaining in the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
In the opening round of Sunday's eliminations, Capps defeated Del Worsham in a spectacular pass which earned that description because of the fiery concussion in the engine compartment that destroyed much of what was under the hood and damaged the body as he crossed the finish line ahead of Worsham. Capps took the win with a 5.824-second pass at 101.82 mph to Worsham's tire-smoking 6.332/170.67.
"In the first round we got a little bit of luck and we haven't seen much of that in a long time," said Capps, who reached the second round for the first time during the playoffs. "The NAPA Dodge struck the tires and backfired and, boy, it's been a long time. I was trying to remember the last time we had an explosion like that.
"The car was coasting and I thought maybe we were going to coast across the finish line and be OK, but then the safety part of the shutoff system deployed the 'chutes before I got to the finish line. That really put the brakes on the car and slowed it down. I could her hear Del getting after his, and I thought, Oh, man, I'm in trouble, he's coming around us.
"But, we got lucky, got that win, and the NAPA AUTO PARTS crew did a great job. We had to change everything on the car. We had the FRAM guys over here, the Matco Tools guys, and a lot of the other DSR crew members helping. We barely made it up for second round.
"In the second round, the NAPA Dodge left great, but Tasca had some problems early and got his going again and ours went out there and struck the tires. We felt really comfortable that we could go back up and run a 4.12 or a .13 and be good to go. But, oh well."
Tasca took the win with a 4.305/297.94 to Capps' 4.763/183.87.
Capps is now 72 points out of fifth place, his goal for the season.
Next up is the 46th annual NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 11-14.
