Skuza Runs to Top Half
LAS VEGAS, (Oct. 27, 2001) - Dean Skuza piloted his Mopar Parts Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car to the fifth slot heading into tomorrow's ACDelco NHRA Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Skuza lapped the quarter mile in 4.855 seconds at 315.64 mph, setting up a round one match up with Del Worsham.
"We only made one good run in qualifying," Skuza said. "We were going for it on our last run, but the track must have really tightened up. I'm looking forward to tomorrow because we have a good car to work with."
Osborne Takes 11th
Alderman Fails to Qualify
Mark Osborne drove his Mopar Parts Dodge Neon R/T to the 11th position when he posted a 6.984-second elapsed time at 197.62 mph. The Abingdon, Va., resident will take on George Marnell in the first round of eliminations.
"We made a nice run in our third one," Osborne said. "I'm pretty pleased with how we performed, but the left lane is clearly the better lane. We're going to have to get a good start to tomorrow to win the race."
Darrell Alderman was on the outside looking in following the final-qualifying session. The three-time Winston Pro Stock World Champion fell to the 17th slot and outside the field after posting a 6.999-second lap at 197.80 mph.
"We just didn't get down the track there in the end," Alderman said. "The car was running straight, but we had the bad lane during the good qualifying session this morning. We'll get at them in Pomona (Calif.)."
Morgan On the Outside
Larry Morgan and the Dodge Motorsports Neon R/T missed the top 16 after logging a 7.044-second elapsed time at 195.05 mph.
"We just can't get over the hump at some of these tracks," Morgan said. "It's real frustrating. We keep making solid runs, but they seem to be during the wrong sessions. "We have a lot of power, but we need to get it to the track."
Nickens Misses Show
Bo Nickens failed to qualify his Mopar-powered Dodge R/T Pro Stock entry when he posted a 7.042-second lap at 197.28 mph.
