October 27, 2010
Larry Morgan, driver of the Lucas Oil Pro Stock Ford Mustang, heads to The Strip in Las Vegas this weekend looking for a repeat performance of last year's win. Morgan talks about turning his season around this year and his hopes for the 2011 NHRA Pro Stock season.
YOU'RE HEADING BACK TO LAS VEGAS WHERE YOU WON LAST YEAR. HOW DO YOU FEEL HEADING INTO THE RACE AS THE DEFENDING CHAMPION? "We feel real good about going back out into this race. We've made little gains here and there over the last couple of weeks and the last few months with the Ford Mustang. We're excited about going into Vegas. We'll definitely try and use some of the set-ups that we used last year and hopefully they'll be beneficial to us and we can go out there and win the race. That will be so exciting for us as well as Ford Racing."
YOU MENTIONED THE TURN AROUND YOU'VE MADE AS A TEAM. WHAT HAS BEEN THE KEY IN DOING THAT? "We've had parts fail, not the Ford Parts, but the parts that we've used on the engine. We've had a few of them fail and that's put us behind. It's not the Ford Parts that's been failing, it's the aftermarket parts that we've used. We've since have got that under control. I'm knocking on wood right now so we don't have that problem again. That's the biggest problems we've had. We feel good about our program right now."
WITH THIS BEING THE FIRST YEAR FOR THE PROGRAM DO YOU LOOK AT ALL THE PROGRESS YOU HAVE MADE AND SEE IT AS NOW YOU'RE ON THE UP AND UP? "We are. The races we didn't qualify at, we broke engines, and it's not like we didn't have the power, we just didn't have the parts that would get us throughout the race and through qualifying. That's what got us in trouble. For the most part we feel good about the performance of the engine and the reliability of the Ford Parts is good."
YOU'VE WORKED WITH MOSE NOWLAND VERY CLOSELY ON THIS PROGRAM AND MOSE IS ACTUALLY CELEBRATING 55 YEARS THIS WEEK THAT HE'S BEEN WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY. HOW HAS IT BEEN WORKING WITH HIM? That guy is the nicest man. Ford is so lucky to have a man like that working on that program, working on any program. To be there for 55 years, not many people can say that they've done that, 55 years in one place is a long time. That guy is so dedicated to what he does. It's been really fun for us to work with a guy like Mose. He's very smart. Congratulations to Mose for being such a valued employee for that long of a period. That's a great accomplishment for anybody. To be so dedicated in his job right now, most guys are looking to get out of there and he's raring to go."
THERE ARE ONLY TWO RACES LEFT IN THE SEASON, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO STARTING 2011 ON A CLEAN SLATE? "Yes I am. That's what I'm looking forward to. I think we're going to do real well in 2011. That's exactly what we're looking for. We'll have all winter to work on what we have right now. We're working on two new motors right now. We're real excited."
