Larry Dixon enters the NHRA Las Vegas Nationals in first place in the NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel point standings. He leads second-place Cory McClenathan by 89 points entering the fifth of six races in the Countdown to 1 NHRA Playoffs. The two remaining Countdown to 1 events will be contested at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, both tracks at which Dixon won earlier this season.
Dixon prior to Las Vegas:
"I'm not really thinking about the championship race too much. I'm trying to keep my routine, keep working out and go into these last two races with the same approach the Al-Anabi team has used all season. We can't do anything about it at this point except stay with what got us here, so I'm keeping my head down and my blinders on. The only thing on my mind is the first qualifying session at Las Vegas...we can't worry about anything else.
"I still feel very fortunate to get that round win at Reading. (Final-round victory over Cory McClenathan) Point-wise, that was a big, big deal. It was only one round, but it was a two-round points swing. If we had lost, our lead would have been half of what is now so that was a big, big win and a very important round.
"This championship battle is different than when I won in 2002 and '03 because of the Countdown. The years I won, it was a full season of trying to have the best car and package all season long to win a championship. With the Countdown to 1, it's about just getting in the top 10 and then trying to work yourself into position. Anybody in the top 10 has a shot, and with the old points system, having as great a year as we've had, we wouldn't have just already uncorked the champagne, we might have already finished it by now. With this format, it's still up for grabs. There are still three guys who have a good shot at it so it's far from over. That's what's different about it from my standpoint. The Countdown keeps you honest -- there's no backing into this thing because you have to be good during the regular season, but then you have to pick it up and battle all the way to the end of the playoffs."
