Miller Lite Team procures provisional Las Vegas pole position.
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 25) - Miller Lite/Don Prudhomme Racing Top Fuel driver Larry Dixon, the leader in the NHRA POWERade points battle, took the provisional pole position for the second annual AC Delco NHRA Nationals on 'The Strip' at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday
Dixon, who recorded a time of 4.569 seconds, 323.81 mph in the afternoon session, led all qualifiers and is now set with an excellent opportunity of taking his eighth No. 1 Low E.T. qualifier of the 2002 season.
The Indianapolis resident won the pole position for the last two races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and holds the track record of 4.509 seconds that he established in Oct. 2001 at the inaugural AC Delco race.
"When we came here in the beginning of the year they ground the track and it really didn't have any rubber on it," said Dixon. "It seems like it's come around real well. By the end of the last race the performances were pretty good and this time around I think it's starting out good. It's a great racetrack. Even at this altitude the cars are flying. I think there's a few cars that can run better than a 4.56. I'd like to think we're one of them."
In the night qualifying session, Dixon recorded of time of 4.581 seconds, 321.96 mph maintaining the consistency in (crew chief) Dick LaHaie's patented tune up as the Miller Lite team prepares for Sunday's final round of eliminations.
Qualifying continues on Saturday with two more sessions at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. PT. ESPN2 will offer two versions of qualifying with an early one-hour program starting at 5:30 p.m. ET followed by a late night two-hour show airing at midnight.
