Dixon and Miller Lite Team Race To 13th Position Friday at Vegas
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 29, 2004) - Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon raced his Miller Lite dragster to a run of 4.663 seconds at 318.84 mph Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to claim the provisional No. 13 qualifying position for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.
Dixon and the Miller Lite crew ran a new injector along with some different engine components on Friday. The Don Prudhomme-owned dragster shook the tires on its opening pass and Dixon coasted to a pass of 9.083 seconds at 86.46 mph. Dixon, a three-time winner at The Strip, then used a tune-up from crew chief Dick LaHaie to power to a run of 4.663 at 318.84 under the lights at LVMS to place him 13th in the order.
"On the first run, the car shook the tires until I shut it off," Dixon said. "We came back on Friday night and made a decent pass. You can't be conservative. We're running a new style of injector and some different engine parts, so we have to learn the personality of the new pieces. At night, you have to stand on it or the car will shake the tires. I drove through some tires shake on the night run and it made it down the track."
The 35-time NHRA winner aims to move into the top half of the Top Fuel order when qualifying resumes at noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30 in Las Vegas. Dixon will face Doug Kalitta in the first round of the Top Fuel Shootout at noon on Saturday. He is a three-time winner (1995, 2002, '03) of the $100,000 bonus event for the Top Fuel category.
ESPN2 will broadcast 90 minutes of qualifying coverage from the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at 10:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Oct. 30 and show three hours of final eliminations coverage at 7 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Oct. 31.
