LAS VEGAS (Oct. 26) Larry Dixon's march toward his first NHRA Winston Top Fuel Championship continued Friday as he qualified Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Dragster in the No. 4 position with his lap of 4.602 seconds at 315.93 mph during the AC Delco NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Dixon, who is in a two-way battle for this year's Top Fuel crown, entered this weekend's event sitting second in the points race, as he is only 15 points behind leader Kenny Bernstein.
The Miller Lite Team came out in the afternoon and laid down its best elapsed time ever at The Strip with Dixon's pass of 4.602 seconds to place No. 3 after the opening session. The evening lap looked like Dixon was about to post a great run until he was forced to shut off near the finish line as the Miller Lite Dragster began to shake. The end result was an elapsed time of 5.537 seconds at 175.78 mph and found Dixon in the No. 4 spot going into Saturday's final two rounds of qualifying. Bernstein sat as the early low qualifier with his pass of 4.575 seconds.
For the season, Dixon has qualified among the top four cars at 19 of the 22 races this season. He is averaging over a No. 3 qualifying effort for the year and has qualified no lower than ninth this year, which happened to occur at Las Vegas earlier this year (April 6-8).
Saturday's action is scheduled to begin at 12:15 PM(PT) with the fourth and final provisional lap slated for 4:00 PM. Television coverage of this week's race begins Sunday on ESPN 2 with qualifying round coverage airing from 1:30-2:30 AM (ET). Elimination rounds can be seen on ESPN 2 beginning at 2:00-3:00 PM (ET) and continues from 7:00-10:00 PM (ET).
