Justin Humphreys looking for good finish to unpredictable season starting at Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Pre-race -- A test session at zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C., could lead Justin Humphreys to success in the last two NHRA POWERade Series Pro Stock races.
Humphreys' RaceRedi Motorsports Pontiac GXP turned in some of its best elapsed times as the team continues adjusting to power supplied by Warren and Kurt Johnson. "We were able to get some tune-up things figured out and Frank (Gugliotta, team crew chief) was able to sort out the car at the same time. I'd say it definitely was a successful test. We'll see what happens when we get to Las Vegas."
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the site of the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, Friday through Sunday, and the Humphreys' crew would like nothing better than to cash in on their test-outing results.
"We're excited to be going to Vegas," added Humphreys, who recorded his quickest Pro Stock elapsed time, 6.589, at Richmond, Va., three weeks ago. "We'd like to get back into the winner's circle once more before the season ends."
That would be a good way to wrap up a season of unforeseen changes for Humphreys. He has weathered unpredictable situations with a smile and sits 11th in point standings, 21 ahead of Warren Johnson. When Humphreys' engine supplier left abruptly after eight races, Humphreys drove a Dodge with Allen Johnson power for nine races.
He returned to his RaceRedi Pontiac when the Johnsons offered motor assistance and, ironically, beat Kurt Johnson in the finale at Charlotte when Johnson's car didn't start.
"Frank and the crew have worked hard and we are seeing those results on the race track," Humphreys said.
Another win or two would write a very happy ending to this sometimes odd season. The Auto Club Finals at Pomona, Calif., closes the season Nov. 16.
