Beckman finds no luck in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 23) -- A hot race track and a little bad luck combined to make things rough for "Fast Jack" Beckman and the Menards/Mail Terminal Services Top Fuel team at today's AC Delco Las Vegas Nationals.
Beckman and his round one opponent, Doug Herbert, smoked the tires immediately after leaving the starting line. However, the more experienced Herbert was able to recover to take the win with an off-pace 6.10 elapsed time. Beckman was forced to shut off when the Menards/Mail Terminal Services Top Fuel car began to drift dangerously close to the centerline.
"I got off the throttle, grabbed the brake handle and then hit the throttle again, but it still smoking the tires," said Beckman, a nominee for the NHRA Auto Club Road to the Future Rookie of the Year award. "I didn't see Doug but then the car made a move towards the centerline and he shot past me. It all comes down to experience. Doug has been driving one of these cars for a long time and I'm still in my first year."
I've been fortunate in that most of the runs I've made have been pretty good ones," Beckman continued. "The problem is that since the Menards/Mail Terminal Services dragster doesn't smoke the tires often, I don't get a lot of practice peddling. I am getting better, though."
Prior to Sunday's eliminations, Beckman had plenty of reason for optimism as he qualified for the fast field with an 11th best 4.58, just two hundredths of a second off his career best. He also ran a 4.60 during qualifying.
"We've proven all year that we are capable of running with the best cars in the class," said Beckman. "I've run 11 races this year and we've qualified at all of them and I'm pretty proud of that."
The Menards/Mail Terminal Services Top Fuel team will no begin to focus on the upcoming Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway, Nov. 3-6. The Pomona race will be the final event on the 23-race 2005 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing tour. Beckman has enjoyed a lot of success at historic Pomona Raceway, winning the Super Comp class there in 1998 and 2003.
