LAS VEGAS, NV, qualifying: Doug Herbert, driver of the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster, qualified in the top half of the field for Sunday's eliminations at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. Herbert enjoyed a strong qualifying effort with three solid runs and continues to prepare for the next year as the 2006 NHRA season draws to a close.
There were 22 Top Fuel dragsters on hand at Las Vegas Motor Speedway attempting to make the 16-car field. Herbert began the weekend with a strong run right out of the trailer Friday afternoon, recording a blistering 4.585 at 322.04 mph to move into the No. 6 position. After the crew quickly serviced the Snap-on Tools dragster, Herbert returned for his second run under the lights. The 39-year-old North Carolinian improved with a consistent 4.564 at 324.28 mph and remained in the No. 6 spot as the first day of professional qualifying ended.
Saturday's weather was a carbon copy of Friday's with temperatures in the 70-degree range and a high cloud cover providing ideal conditions at the desert facility. Herbert shook the tires on his third qualifying attempt of the weekend and dropped one spot on the Top Fuel ladder to No. 7 with one session remaining. On his last attempt Herbert made another good run, roaring to a 4.600 at 312.64 mph to finish qualifying in the No. 8 position. He'll face David Grubnic in round one of Sunday's eliminations.
"It's been a good weekend," Herbert said, "to qualify in the top half is a tough deal these days. We went down the track and we ran well and we haven't hurt a bunch of parts, so all and all I think the Snap-on Tools team is doing a good job right now. We just need to go out tomorrow and take out Grubnic and see if we can go a few rounds."
