Herbert and the Snap-on Team Feel Confident for Vegas
This weekend, Oct. 31-Nov. 2, the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster will compete in the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals from The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After reaching the finals and semifinals in the last two events, the Snap-on team is feeling confident about traveling west for the final two races of the season.
The most recent event, at Richmond, proved to be a record-setting one. Herbert's first-round pass of 3.789 made him the third driver to ever run in the 3.70's. Also achieving the feat were Tony Schumacher and Hillary Will, who are currently first and second in the Top Fuel point standings.
At this event last fall Herbert qualified 11th. Earlier this year, in the spring race at The Strip, the SnaponFranchise.com dragster scored a stronger qualifying position, making it into the top-half of the field; however, the team fell in the first round of eliminations to Brandon Bernstein.
With only two events remaining in the 2008 season, 'Dougzilla' and the Snap-on team are currently sixth in the NHRA Top Fuel point standings. With only 38 points separating Herbert and third-place Antron Brown, the team has an opportunity to make a significant jump in the standings this weekend in Las Vegas.
"We left Richmond feeling good about being one of the few cars to run in the 3.70's but we were a little stumped about why we smoked the tires in the semifinals. We've done a lot of work in the shop over the past two weeks to figure it out. The past few races have been good, I feel like we found some consistency. We could be peaking at the right time, considering we've got a good shot to move up in the points.
I've been low qualifier at Vegas but I've never won there before. It would be nice to build on the success we've had recently with a win, especially for our special guest we have coming out for the race, Snap-on President Tom Ward. I really enjoy it when the folks from Snap-on can join us at the track.
Racing at Vegas is just a lot of fun. Bruton [Smith] really takes everything to the next level. The race here in Charlotte a few weeks ago was at Bruton's "Bellagio of dragstrips". Since I'll be out in Vegas maybe I'll stop by the Bellagio Hotel and check-out the fountains -- I think that's about the only thing Bruton is missing at his dragstrip here in Charlotte!"
