McClenathan defeats Muldowney, loses to D. Kalitta

LAS VEGAS (October 26, 2003) -- In the opening round of today's NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Cory McClenathan, from Riverside, Calif., turned back the legendary Shirley Muldowney, who was competing in the next-to-last race on her "Last Past Tour."

In the first round, McClenathan recorded a pass of 4.619 seconds in the Darrell Gwynn Racing/NY Yankees/Berryman Products Dragster, while Muldowney, the three-time Top Fuel champion, slowed to an elapsed time of 4.930 seconds.

In the second round McClenathan fell victim to Doug Kalitta. Cory Mac spun the tires, lost some blower boost, put some cylinders out, thus causing a small fire. McClenathan ran a 5.096 second pass to 4.559 seconds for Kalitta.

McClenathan remains fifth in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings. He leaves the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals with 1076 points, 67 points in front of sixth.

Additionally, McClenathan qualified No. 4, with 3,005 points for the Budweiser Shootout, a special race-within-a-race, held on Saturday during the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals in Pomona, Calif.

The final race of the 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series will unfold for Cory Mac and the Darrell Gwynn Racing/NY Yankees/Berryman Products Team with the running of the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals, Nov. 6-9, at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway.
