G Squared Motorsports hopes to win jackpot at Vegas
LAS VEGAS (October 26, 2004) -- G Squared Motorsports (G2), owned by George Bryce and George Smith, returns to action at the fourth annual NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals, which unfolds this weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
With Chip Ellis handling the driving duties aboard the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell, G2 feels that the shifting linkage problem that prevented the team from showing their full potential at the last NHRA event at Reading is behind them and G2 and Ellis are ready to be a factor at Vegas.
"Following the Reading event we did some testing," said Smith, "and found what we believe was the ongoing shifting problem at that last event. Subsequent testing shows that the problem has been corrected and the transmission is working as it should now.
"Vegas will be our sixth race with the bike and with each new outing we feel that we're better prepared than the previous time and all of us at G Squared and S&S Cycle hopes that proves out this weekend. It will be like winning the jackpot."
Ellis, who holds AMA/Prostar championships in both Funnybike and Formula Superbike, will be looking for his first NHRA win since joining G2 at Indy over the Labor Day weekend. At the U.S. Nationals, he was the first rookie in NHRA Pro Stock Bike history to take the No. 1 qualifying position in his first race.
"I love this Las Vegas track. It's my favorite," said Ellis. "A win here would mean a lot to both G Squared Motorsports and to me personally.
"We will just take things as they come this weekend. First we want to qualify high and then take it the proverbial one round at a time on Sunday. We have the potential and the performance to put this G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell in the winner's circle.
"It has always been a dream for me personally to race on the NHRA circuit. Therefore my first win, when it comes, will be one I'll never forget."
With George Bryce and Ken Johnson calling the tuning shots, qualifying for Ellis and the G2/S&S/Star Racing Buell begins with two sessions scheduled for Friday (Oct. 29) at 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. and will conclude with two additional sessions on Saturday (Oct. 30) at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Eliminations for all classes will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All times are local Las Vegas time and subject to change at anytime.
Qualifying highlights for the NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Saturday (Oct. 30) from 10:30 p.m. until midnight. ESPN2 will also air same-day television coverage of eliminations from 7 until 10 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 31). Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to change at anytime.
