Angelle's chase of a Vegas jackpot will start from 2nd.
The second day of qualifying for the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals offered competitors a completely different set of tuning conditions, as Friday's clear skies and seasonable temperatures were replaced by threatening clouds and a wintery chill, much better suited for creating horsepower.
Angelle Savoie and the Mohegan Sun Racing team took full advantage of the improved conditions, as their Star Racing Suzuki scorched The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 7.229 seconds with a top speed of 183.12 mph on Saturday morning. This not only earned the current NHRA POWERade points leader the second position for Sunday's final eliminations, but set the stage for a rematch of the final round in Reading five weeks ago, as Angelle will meet Karen Stoffer in the first round. "Our first run this morning was awesome, going right down the track. I couldn't believe how cold it had gotten, and even more surprised that we only ran in the twenties. I thought we'd actually go faster.
"We did change the rear tire before the last run, which we knew would slow us down, but we wanted to be prepared for eliminations. After all, we're more concerned with winning the race on Sunday than qualifying number one. Having said that, I'm not sure we could have run quicker than a 7.21 (run by Matt Hines to claim the No. 1 position) even with an old tire.
"We are putting 'Jericho' back in for tomorrow, an engine that has developed the nickname of 'Sunday Money', so we're hoping to do well. I know I'm ready, having had some decent lights in qualifying and the track is awesome.
"Tomorrow, we're just going to focus on one round at a time. I know I run Karen in the first round, but right now, she's just another opponent standing between us and a win. I really want to win this race for a couple reasons besides clinching the championship. Naturally, this Star Racing team wants to win every race we enter. On top of that, I think it would be awesome to come to Las Vegas and win with the Mohegan Sun Suzuki."
