BARTONE, DAVIS LEAD SPORTSMAN WINNERS AT SUMMITRACING.COM NATIONALS IN LAS VEGAS
GLENDORA, Calif. (April 6, 2009) -- Tony Bartone, who has spent the last several years driving Jim Dunn's fuel Funny Car entry in the NHRA Full Throttle Series, returned to the sportsman ranks in style at the recently completed SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas. The Long Island City, N.Y., resident scored his second NHRA national event win of the year in Top Alcohol Funny Car taking out veteran flopper pilot Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb.
In Top Alcohol Dragster, Murrieta, Calif., racer Justin Davis scored his first national event win of the season. Starting from the No. 5 qualifying spot, Davis beat three-time Pacific division champion Chris Demke of Sunland, Calif., in the final. This was Demke's fourth straight final-round appearance this season but he has yet to make it to the winner's circle.
Longtime sportsman competitor Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., scored an emotional double victory in Las Vegas, taking home the hardware in both Super Stock and Stock Eliminator. Lang and his brother Toby have long been fixtures in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and their mother Janet was always right there. However, Janet passed away earlier this year and it was Jody's first final-round appearance without her cheering him on from the starting line. For Jody, the reigning Northwest division Stock Eliminator champ, the wins were No. 15 and No. 16 in national event competition.
In Comp Eliminator, Dan Fletcher, Churchville, N.Y., won his third national event of the season when he outran Scott Hedlund, Anaheim, Calif., in the final. Santa Fe resident Michael Miller ousted Travis Theobald of St. George, Utah, to score the Super Comp win and Super Gas racer Ted Seipel, San Leandro, Calif., beat Justin Lamb, Henderson, Nev., to grab the win. Tim Landis, Glendale, Ariz., came away with the win in Super Street when he beat Joe Greco, San Jose, Calif., in the final.
NHRA Pacific division racers will have another shot at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this weekend as the first of two NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events scheduled at the facility gets under way Friday, April 10, 2009.
