Doug Kalitta looks to Las Vegas for great racing and a win
Las Vegas, Nev., March 26, 2004 -- At the last NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series national event in Gainesville, Fla., Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster driver Doug Kalitta won his 200th elimination round by inches over defending Top Fuel champ Larry Dixon. In fact, the finish was so close that it garnered Kalitta an extra $1,000 for winning the Motel 6 "Who Got the Light" award for narrowest margin of victory in eliminations -- .0016 sec.
Kalitta, a 15-time NHRA event winner and owner of the quickest quarter-mile lap in NHRA history of 4.428 sec. (Chicago 2, 2003), is hoping for more close racing and more win lights at the next and fourth event of the 23-race schedule, the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 1-4.
"Racing that close is really exciting for the drivers and the fans," Kalitta said. "I don't mind if they are all that close as long as we get the win light in our lane."
"Connie (Kalitta, Doug's uncle, team owner and crew chief) and Rahn (Tobler, co-crew chief) have our Mac Tools dragster running great as always. We had hoped to do better in Gainesville (round two loss), but we are still second in points. Plus, we have taken out the champ (Dixon) three times in a row now, so that's good too."
Kalitta has two final round appearances in his bright red Mac Tools dragster in 2004 (Pomona 1, Phoenix). The 39-year-old from Ann Arbor, Mich., has made 34 money-round appearances in his seven-year drag racing career.
"I've always liked racing in Las Vegas," he said. "The track is smooth and the crowd is always big. One of our great associate sponsors, Technicoat Companies, is based there, so we always have a great time with the cowboys (Bob Coffman, CEO, and Glen Williams, COO) and their friends and customers. Hopefully, we can get a win for them this time."
Doug and his Kalitta Motorsports teammates David Grubnic and cousin Scott Kalitta, drivers of the Kalitta Air Top Fuel dragster and the Mac Tools/Jesse James Top Fuel dragster respectively, will begin qualifying Friday.
