Little luck for Kalitta in Las Vegas.
Las Vegas, NV, April 7, 2002 - Sometimes in Las Vegas, the dice seem to always roll to your favor and then sometimes, they seem to never roll your way. This past weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was unfortunately more of the later for the MAC Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster team.
After struggling through three tire-smoking rounds of qualifying at the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals, the MAC Tools dragster team with driver, Doug Kalitta finally cashed-in. A 4.875-second (307.72 mph) run down the quarter-mile in the final qualifying session grabbed the 15th spot in the 16-dragster field.
"Well, Connie (Kalitta, Crew Chief) and I aggressively de-tuned the MAC Tools dragster so we could make sure to get in the show, and it worked," said Co-Crew Chief, Jim Oberhofer.
The good fortune ended there. Kalitta lost a cylinder and then lost a close race with Cory McClenathan in the first round of eliminations Sunday. McClenathan (4.732 seconds, 318.77 mph) edged Kalitta (4.791 seconds, 311.05 mph) by .0488 seconds at the finish line to end a frustrating weekend for Team Kalitta.
"The clutch on our MAC Tools dragster just never seemed to wear correctly all weekend," said Oberhofer. "Our MAC Tools/Kalitta Motorsports team is resilient though. We will re-group and go after our first win of 2002 in Houston."
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series hits the track next for the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas near Houston, April 11-14 at Houston Raceway Park.
