LAS VEGAS - A sign of a true champion is not letting a slump get the best of you. NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car ace Dennis Taylor hopes to exemplify that remark during this weekend's SummitRacing.com Nationals at "The Strip" in Las Vegas. After a string of disappointing outings, Taylor and the Cooner Wire team hope to make the pieces fall in place this weekend, and wouldn't mind a little help from Las Vegas 'Lady Luck.'
Taylor, from Anaheim, Calif., cites that driving with the flu contributed to the team's early exit in Tucson. Despite the first round loss, Taylor feels the team gathered a tremendous amount of information running in high-altitude conditions.
"Trying to drive the car with the flu was much more difficult than I anticipated last weekend," said Taylor. "It turned out to be a big problem. Your senses are really thrown for a loop when you are not feeling well, and that's kind of what we went through. On an up note, we probably made more progress on some areas of the car than we have ever made in one race. I really and truly believe we are definitely heading on the right track heading into Vegas this weekend."
Event winner Bucky Austin set the pace last weekend in Tucson in similar atmospheric conditions with a 5.85 second elapsed time. Taylor feels that it will take 5.70's to win in Vegas, however.
"I think it will take more than 5.80's this weekend," stated Taylor. "I actually expect that everybody will run better than they did in Tucson. The corrected altitude was above 5000 feet most of the weekend. It was pretty hot out there, and I also expect it to be pretty hot in Vegas. I would still say we are shooting for 5.70's in Vegas. I know Bucky [Austin] ran a 5.66 in testing there, but it was a good bit cooler than what I expect it will be this weekend."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the Top Alcohol Funny Cars with two sessions. They will make their final qualifying pass Saturday morning, then run round one of eliminations that afternoon. Final eliminations will conclude the event Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
