LAS VEGAS (April 5, 2003) -- Behind the wheel of the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports/American Racing/Waterloo Tool Storage Top Fuel Dragster, second-generation driver David Baca reached his highest qualifying position of his brief professional career when he qualified third at the fourth annual NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals.

After losing a blower belt in Friday's first qualifying session, Baca, from Brentwood, Calif., blazed The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 4.528 seconds at 320.36 mph in the cool air of Friday evening. His elapsed time and speed were both career best.

He continued the pace on Saturday running the second quickest time of the first session -- 4.656 seconds. In the final qualifying session Baca remained consistent stopping the finish line timing lights in 4.655 seconds.

In the opening round of eliminations tomorrow Baca will face off against Jim Head, from Columbus, Ohio. Head qualified 14th with a run of 4.824 seconds at 229.70 mph. This is the first match up between the pair.

"The first few days of this SummitRacing.com Nationals have gone awesome," said Baca, who enters tomorrow ninth in the NHRA POWERade point standings. "We had a career best Friday night and today two consistent runs. We'll pick it up tomorrow and hopefully go out and kick butt."
