David Baca Qualifies 12th; Vs. Herbert Sunday at Las Vegas

David and Dennis Baca and Larry Meyer appreciated the fact their Baca Motorsports Top Fuel dragster qualified for Sunday's SummitRacing.com Nationals, but they didn't like the manner in which it happened.

A 50-cent brass fitting on the engine's fuel line broke Friday night, and the ensuing fire and broken parts reduced the metal innards to pieces and slowed the car to 4.662 seconds at 300.40 mph. Nevertheless, the time was good for 12th place. Baca, in the construction business in the San Francisco Bay Area when he isn't racing, squares off against Doug Herbert in the first round.

"We were on a real good run, but when something like that happens, there's nothing good to come of it. The car was on a real good run and had excellent numbers to half track, but it dropped off very quickly after that," said David Baca.

"I've never seen pistons and rods beaten up like that in my 12 years of drag racing," said crew chief Kevin Poynter.

Baca didn't make a second run Saturday due to a mechanical problem the team found when the car was warmed before the session.

This is the fifth of 23 NHRA POWERade Series races.
