LAS VEGAS -- David Baca, driver of the Henkelman & Baca American Racing/Waterloo/YP.net Top Fuel Dragster, feels confident that the testing the team did at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in February will be to their benefit at this weekend's NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals being contested on that same quarter-mile drag strip.
"We are looking forward to picking up at Vegas where we left off at Gainesville," said Baca, whose semifinal round appearance at Gainesville made competitors stand up and take notice. "We feel that the testing that we did here will carryover to this weekend and hopefully give the team that little edge we are hunting for to continue the momentum we enjoyed at the Gainesville race.
"We're pretty excited. Our performance at Gainesville showed what this team is capable of. The team's starting to gel and (crew chief) Johnny West is figuring out the tune up on this old piece of pipe. Our goal is to lay down a good qualifying number then go rounds on Sunday. Johnny's taking small steps each race and making big strides in our performance. Johnny told me, 'We'd rather start slow and finish strong.' So hopefully our performance will continue to improve race-by-race. We're looking forward to running with the big dogs."
Baca made his professional Top Fuel debut at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway at the next-to-last event of the 2002. "That first race seems so long ago but in reality this will be only our six race as a professional driver," reflected Baca. "The fact remains that we wouldn't be where we are today, if it was for the financial backing that we are receiving.
"We have a great marketing partnership with the folks at American Racing, Waterloo Tool Storage and YP.net. These companies are a compliment to each other and to our team. Our job is to create awareness for these companies. We look forward to promoting their products on and off the track."
Baca, a second generation driver from Brentwood, Calif., whose father won several national events in Top Fuel including the U.S. Nationals in 1977, enters the SummitRacing.com Nationals in ninth pace in the NHRA POWERade(r) Top Fuel point standings.
Off the track, Baca will be signing autographs, along with a number of Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock drivers, at the ESPN Zone at the New York New York Hotel & Casino on the strip in Las Vegas on Thursday, April 3, from 7-8 p.m. Then on Saturday night, April 5, from 7-9 p.m., The Las Vegas Club Casino & Hotel, in downtown Las Vegas, will host a Fan Appreciation Party for the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports team. Baca and the entire crew will be signing autographs, available for photographs and raffling souvenir parts, etc. in a special section of the casino area of the Las Vegas Club Casino & Hotel. The Las Vegas Club Casino & Hotel will be giving away "Players Club" cards, while supply last, and will have food and drink specials available for this special event.
