Grubnic flying high in Kalitta Air dragster
Las Vegas, Nev., March 29, 2004 -- "Aussie Dave" Grubnic is flummoxed. He is running out of adjectives to describe how excited he is about his success thus far in the young 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season.
In the first three events, Grubnic has piloted his new, Connie "the Bounty Hunter" Kalitta-tuned Kalitta Air Top Fuel dragster to two consecutive No. 1 qualifying positions (Phoenix, Gainesville) and into two semi-final round appearances (Pomona 1, Gainesville). All of which have propelled the likeable native Australian to a career-high No. 4 in NHRA Top Fuel championship points.
The 10-year veteran has been hard pressed to show any signs of a frown since being named the driver of the third Kalitta Motorsports rail in January. At the second event in Phoenix, Grubnic recorded his career-best elapsed time of 4.486 sec. and his career-best speed of 324.51 mph.
"To be quite honest, I am almost speechless," Grubnic jokingly admitted. "But, I like to talk and ramble on so, not quite speechless."
"This whole season so far has been a fantastic whirlwind for me. I knew we were going to be competitive, but since our car is primarily for research and development, I never dreamed we would be having the kind of year we're having already."
With two career runner-up finishes, Grubnic hopes that the upcoming NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 1-4, will be lucky enough for him to finally take home the winner's hardware.
"You need a little luck in racing," he said. "You need a good car to win, but a little luck can go a long way towards winning too. I like racing in [Las] Vegas. The track is always fast and always well prepared. I am having so much fun right now. We could race on rocks, and I would still be stoked."
Grubnic and his Kalitta Motorsports teammates Doug and Scott Kalitta, drivers of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster and the Mac Tools/Jesse James Top Fuel dragster respectively, will begin qualifying Friday, April 2.
