Advance Auto Parts Racing team eager to race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
LAS VEGAS (April 1, 2003) -- Cruz Pedregon and The Advance Auto Parts Racing Team will head toward Las Vegas this weekend to compete at the NHRA Summitracing.com Nationals held at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The team is anxious to get back to the track after spending a good majority of the month of March working at the Indianapolis shop. While the Las Vegas event serves as the fourth race of the 2003 POWERade Drag Racing series, it also marks the first of many back-to-back races of the season, as the team takes toward Houston, TX, the week following.
As the fourth annual event officially begins this Thursday, April 3rd, Cruz Pedregon will be among 23 nitro Funny Car competitors seeking the Las Vegas Championship title. While the Las Vegas facility provides a smooth track surface, the elevation is slightly above sea level, which often creates challenges for teams. However, cool weather predictions for this weekend have kept the Advance Auto Parts Racing Team in high spirits. New to the car tune-up, will also be a slightly different clutch set-up, which was put in place at the Gainesville test session. Although only one attempt was made before the car wheel stood, the clutch set-up seemed promising enough for the Las Vegas event.
"Our biggest priority for the weekend is to make each qualifying session count," comments owner/driver Cruz Pedregon. "Rob, Dave, and I all agree that before we can set out to win a race, we need to qualify in the top half of the field. We are anticipating a fast track at this facility and look to make some solid, consistent passes."
In addition to his responsibilities at the track, Cruz will also be making an appearance at the LVMS hosted autograph session that will take place on Thursday, April 3rd at the New York New York Hotel and Casino. Cruz will be among many other professional NHRA drivers signing autographs from 7 to 8 pm at the ESPN Zone Restaurant overlooking the famous Las Vegas Strip. The session is open to all fans.
Professional qualifying sessions of the Summitracing.com Nationals will begin on Friday, April 4th at 3:00 and 6:00 pm and on Saturday at 11:30 and 2:30 pm. Final Eliminations will begin on Sunday at 11:00 am following the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Opening Ceremonies. Television coverage will take place on April 5th (qualifying) on ESPN2 from 10:00 pm to Midnight (ET) as well as on April 6th (final eliminations) on ESPN from 2:00 to 3:00 pm and on ESPN2 (finals) from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am (ET). A repeat of final eliminations will be held on ESPN2 on April 11 from 12:30 am to 2:30 am (ET).
