McClenathan rebounds, qualifies No. 4
LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2004) -- Yesterday's cancellation of both qualifying sessions may have been a blessing in disguise for Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster. The Riverside, Calif., driver, who made the best of today's two sessions, qualified No. 4 for the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals.
Under the guidance of new crew chief Todd Smith, who joined the team at the end of last week, McClenathan blazed to a pass of 4.550 seconds down The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway quarter-mile. It was McClenathan's quickest pass in four races this season.
"Yesterday we were just trying to get everything switched over or I should say Todd was trying to get things the way they were supposed to be and ready the way he wanted them to be," reflected McClenathan. "It was just one of those things and the rains came. It turned out it was a blessing for us. The extra time allowed us to feel a lot more comfortable today and the numbers showed that. My thanks go out to Todd and the crew. They are the ones that made this happen."
Added Smith, "I want to thank Andy and Mark (Carrier) for giving me the opportunity to do this. It's been a long week. We worked really hard, but it paid off."
McClenathan will face John Smith in tomorrow's opening round. Smith qualified No. 13 with a run of 4.686 seconds at 299.13 mph. The pair have meet eight times previously, with McClenathan holding a six to two advantage. Final eliminations get underway at 11 a.m. (local time -- PDT) tomorrow.
