Parts keep McClenathan from answering the second round bell
LAS VEGAS (April 4, 2004) -- Parts incompatibility was the undoing for Cory McClenathan, driver of the Carrier Boyz Racing Berryman Products Top Fuel dragster, as he was unable to answer the bell for his second round match up at the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals.
After running a season-best elapsed time during yesterday's qualifying of 4.550 seconds, then backed it up with a 4.554 seconds in today's opening round of eliminations, McClenathan and the Carrier Boyz Racing team could only sit in their pit area while Doug Herbert took the win light unopposed in the second round.
A malfunction in the clutch area was the cause of the second round problem. Newly hired crew chief Todd Smith explained.
"Basically, we had a problem in the clutch area that we couldn't get fixed," said Smith. "It was a side effect of having only worked with this car since Wednesday. We have a good race car and a good tune up but there are organizational things that we need to handle. It was a simple thing but even simple things can mess one of these dragsters up. We'll spend the ten days getting everything ready to race at Houston."
McClenathan added, "The guys did a really great job. We had a lot of new people come in here on Wednesday I though we had it nailed when we ran a 55 (4.55 seconds) during qualifying and another one during first round of eliminations. In the end, we found that we had parts that didn't match up with other parts and it bit us. We try to be as prepared as we can. We now have ten days to get organized.
"I want to thank Jerry and Joan Gwynn and Darrell Gwynn for sending us the parts we needed to use this weekend. In the same breath, I want to thank all the sponsors for sticking it out and giving us the opportunity. In closing, all I can say is that I've been doing this for 14 years in Top Fuel and I just found another way to lose."
Now it's on to Baytown, Texas and the O'Reilly Spring Nationals at Houston Raceway Park, April 15-18.
