ANTRON BROWN EARNS PROVISIONAL NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITION FRIDAY AT LAS VEGAS
LAS VEGAS (April 16, 2010) - Antron Brown continues to look racey behind the wheel of his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army Top Fuel dragster. The 24-time NHRA winner earned the provisional No. 1 qualifying award for the second straight week after pacing the field at 3.881-seconds on the opening day of qualifying for the 11th annual Summitracing.com Nationals.
Brown, who enters the sixth race on the 2010 NHRA schedule ranked third in the NHRA Top Fuel standings on the heels of three straight final-round appearances, posted the ninth quickest run of Friday's opening qualifying session. The Matco Tools/U.S. Army car lost traction on the 128-degree track and slowed to a run of 5.085 seconds at 141.08 mph. The Matco Tools flagship driver rebounded on Friday's second effort, using a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to blister The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway track in 3.881 at 316.60. It also was the fastest run of the day for Brown, who clocked a career-best speed last weekend near Houston (321.96 mph).
"That was an awesome run," Brown said. "Our car is running so well. Our Matco Tools team is so good right now and we're really hungry. We're doing so well, but we want to cash in for the win and take home a 'Wally' trophy. You know, that first session was hot, really hot and we just missed it a bit. Brian (Corradi) and Mark (Oswald) made the right adjustments and we ran that great 3.88. I don't know if it will hold for the top spot on Saturday, but it will be tough to beat."
