DIXON SETS PACE WITH 4.55-SECOND PASS ON FIRST DAY OF INDY TEST
CLERMONT, Ind. (Aug. 23, 2005) -- Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon and Don Prudhomme's Miller Lite Top Fuel team began testing in preparation for the upcoming Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Tuesday at Indianapolis Raceway Park (I.R.P.) as Dixon made three passes on the first day of the two-day open test.
Dixon's Miller Lite/Ameriquest dragster overpowered the track as soon as the 37-time NHRA winner hit the throttle on his first attempt. The veteran Top Fuel racer then drove to a run of 4.649 seconds at 290.82 mph after lifting near the 1,000-foot mark. On his third and final effort, Dixon blasted his Miller-backed rail to performance of 4.553 at 322.04 under the lights at the historic Indiana quarter mile. It was the quickest run of the first day of testing at I.R.P.
"Everything went very smoothly today," Dixon said. "On the first run, the car smoked the tires instantly. We made an adjustment, went back up and I drove it to 1,000-feet and it ran 4.64. We were trying some different equipment and on the last run they said to take it to the first light at the finish line and we ran 4.55. Tomorrow, I think that we'll try some different things with the engine and clutch to make our car better for Indy next weekend."
Dixon and the Brownsburg, Ind.-based race team will continue preparing for the 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Aug. 31-Sept. 5, when testing resumes on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Dixon is a two-time winner of the prestigious drag race (1995, 2001).
