Tony Pedregon Heads To Route 66 With Momentum On His Side
Joliet, Ill., May 17, 2004 - Route 66 Raceway is known for having some of the fastest times in NHRA Funny Car history. It's where the fastest speed record (329.18 mph) was set until this past weekend when defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon blasted the Quaker State/Shrek 2 Chevrolet Monte Carlo to 329.83 mph at Atlanta Dragway to claim the fastest Funny Car in history title. With all of that said, if the weather cooperates, we could possibly see a 330 mph pass and you can bet that the Quaker State racing team has there eye set on doing that when racing begins on Friday.
Pedregon won at Route 66 Raceway last season and in 2002. He also was the number one qualifier in 2002.
"Route 66 Raceway is one of my favorite tracks on the circuit," said Pedregon. "I've had the privilege of winning there twice and would like nothing more than to put our car in the winner circle for our first win of the season.
"We had a great weekend in Atlanta, added Pedregon. "I don't think many people thought that we would be the team to run that close to 330 mph, but it's the combination of hard work and dedication that has gotten us to this level of accomplishment in a short amount of time. Dickie (Venables) and Kurt (Elliott) are doing an excellent job at making the right calls. I'm really looking forward to getting back on the track this weekend to see what we can do."
The Quaker State racing team with their special "Shrek 2" promotion paint scheme will begin qualifying on Friday, May 21st with two sessions slated for 5:00 pm and 8:00 p.m. Two more sessions are scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Final Eliminations will be held on Sunday, May 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
