TONY PEDREGON BACK ON TRACK
Joliet, Ill.(June 11, 2007) -- Showing the resiliency of a Champion, Tony Pedregon, the 2003 NHRA Nitro Funny Car World Champion, and his Q Power team bounced back from a disappointing experience at Topeka by qualifying 12th and advancing to the second round of eliminations at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals, June 7-10, 2007.
"Our goal is to make it to the final round and win. Anything other than that seems like a missed opportunity," said Pedregon. "On the positive side, we recovered from not making the show at Topeka and we beat John Force in the first round."
The Route 66 crowd came to their feet for the Pedregon vs. John Force match-up in Sunday's Elimination Round 1.Pedregon, his new Q Power Funny Car glistening in the Illinois sun, was ready to go rounds and needed to get by his old boss to do so. Pedregon knocked out both lights, then pounced on the throttle (.042 to Force's .058) on his way to a stellar round win against the multi-time NHRA Nitro Funny Car Champion, a 4.903 @ 315.78.Force hazed the tires at 0x00bc track and was never a factor.
"John Force is always a tough opponent," said the Pedregon who posted his NHRA career best speed, 331.28 mph, at Chicago in 2004. "Anytime you can beat Force, it's a good day."
"We started the year with a new motor/clutch combination that has a different operating range," stated Pedregon. "We'll continue to learn how to make it work more consistently, make a few changes and be ready to win in Englishtown in a couple of weeks."
Pedregon remains 6th in the NHRA Nitro Funny Car Countdown to the Championship. He'll be looking to improve his standing as the NHRA heads to Englishtown, NJ for the NHRA SuperNationals, June 21-24.
