JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO NO. 13 SPOT AT JOLIET

JOLIET, Ill. (June 11, 2005) -- Six-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. raced his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the 13th qualifying position Saturday at Route 66 Raceway after the Iowa native posted a qualifying-best run of 4.842 seconds.

Johnson, one of 13 drivers to have scored victories in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, saved his best for last, as the Skoal Racing flopper powered to a performance of 4.842 seconds at 319.14 mph on its fourth and final qualifying attempt at the Joliet drag strip. Johnson's Monte Carlo overpowered the hot Route 66 Raceway strip on Saturday's first attempt. The Don Prudhomme Racing driver made two passes in the 4.8-second range this weekend at the Chicago-area track.

"We were just going for it too much on the first run," Johnson said. "We knew that after the run. We had to see what we could get away with for race day. We made a few changes and made a nice, good run on the last pass. We were right there with the top cars on that final pass."

Johnson will match-up against No. 4 qualifier and fellow Chevy driver Tim Wilkerson on Sunday. Johnson is 6-3 in his career against the veteran driver from Illinois. They have yet to meet this season. Johnson advanced to the final round at Route 66 Raceway two years ago.
