Hammonds starts strong, sits 2nd at Joliet qualifying midpoint.

The first day of qualifying at the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Nationals proved quite eventful for Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier driver Tom Hammonds. Prior to taking to the track, he parted company with crew chief Donnie Gardner, which meant Hammonds would have to assume the tuning duties on his race car for the weekend.

Hammonds proved more than up to the task, as he opened with a solid 6.901-second, mph effort on Friday afternoon. However, his day was far from done, as on his second attempt, Hammonds posted the quickest elapsed time of the evening session, rocketing down the Joliet quarter-mile in 6.870 seconds, placing him 2nd entering Saturday's final time trials.

"It is a tremendous relief for the entire Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care team, especially considering the struggles we've gone through over the last four races. I owe it all to a lot of hard work by my guys, Eric (Luzinski), Mike (Matthews), and Donnie, even though he's not with us anymore. They stuck with the program, got back to basics and our Cavalier made a good run.

"I also have to thank Jimmy Oliver, Tom Roberts and Boone Roberts, as well as Ron Krisher, who is one of the greater guys in this pit area. Without them, this total team effort wouldn't be possible.

"I'm happy not only for my team, but for all our sponsors. But this is just the beginning. We need to stay consistent and carry this performance on through race day."
