Skoal Racing Team makes progress at Chicagoland Nationals.
JOLIET, Ill., June 2, 2002 - There was progress made in the Skoal Racing Funny Car camp this weekend at Route 66 Raceway.
Four consecutive, consistent runs by Tommy Johnson Jr. in his Blue Skoal Racing Camaro Funny Car displayed the promise brought by new crew chief Rob Flynn during the Chicagoland Dodge Dealers Nationals. And his 4.915-second, 311.05-mph run in Sunday's first-round setback to Del Worsham - the eventual race winner - was his second quickest of the 2002 NHRA Powerade season.
Ron Capps, driver of the Green Skoal Racing Camaro, said his crew "made strides to find consistent tune-ups" during the race. But Capps, who qualified eighth at 4.866 seconds, didn't get out of the first round, either.
Flynn, brought on board two weeks ago, started with a 5.016 and added a 4.933 (that put him 12th in the starting line-up) and 4.995 to wrap up qualifying.
In the first round, Johnson left first with a .510 reaction time to a .548, but the car's tires began spinning as it got closer to the finish line and Worsham was able to drive past him, winning with a 4.858 at 310.98 mph. "I thought I had him covered when the car started to spin the tires a little bit and he got by me," Johnson said. "I think we have a contending car now."
"We are making progress, but unfortunately my reaction time was very much below my standards," Capps said following his loss to Gary Densham. Capps had the quickest run, 4.942 seconds at 312.42 mph to 4.960 at 305.70, but Densham got to the finish line first, thanks to a .447 reaction time to Capps' .525. He was going to be tough with a reaction time like that."
With 10 of 23 races complete, Johnson is seventh with 455 points and Capps is 10th with 431.
The next event, the Pontiac Excitement Nationals, takes place at National Trail Raceway, June 14-16, at Kirksville, Ohio.
