JOLIET, Ill. - After having a relatively 'slow' summer, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard and team are gearing up to make a late season charge to solidify her spot in national standings. Howard is currently fifth nationally, and hopes to pick up her third win of the year during this weekend's NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway, just outside of Chicago.
With races in the next four out of five weekends, the Tulsa, Okla., based team's schedule will be anything but slow. Although Howard plans to stick to her normal 'new day, new race,' philosophy, her outlook has changed somewhat. With the season winding down to a close, Howard hopes to close out the year strong like she did last year to give her the same momentum next year that has carried her to four wins and two runner-ups this year in her Tom Conway tuned Blown Alcohol Dragster.
"It's up to Tom [Conway] if we try anything new for next year," said Howard. "Tom is constantly looking to the future as far as innovations. It's towards the end of this race season; this is when you start getting ready for the next season, and I certainly look forward to next year. I just leave it to Tom, and whatever he thinks we need to do, we do."
"I want to finish out the year as well as we can," Howard continued. "It's been a good year, and we're doing ok in the points. But, it's time to start looking forward to next year, also."
Howard and team's gameplan of striving for consistency rather than record-setting performances has paid off for the team this year. Even with the 2002 season on the horizon, Howard still plans to stay with her successful formula.
"Hopefully we can run with a good amount of consistency here," stated Howard. "I want to run good e.t. (elapsed time), but I also want to be consistent. The weather is going to be cool, so the A/Fuel cars will be running really well."
