JOLIET, Ill., June 1, 2003 - For the second straight week, Scott Geoffrion ran a quicker elapsed time than his opponent only to be sent home after the first round.

Geoffrion, the No. 2 Pro Stock qualifier, squared off against Kurt Johnson, who is No. 2 in Pro Stock points but had a tough time qualifying and started 15th (5.814 seconds) in Sunday's Lucas Oil Route 66 Nationals.

Johnson left the starting line first and won with a 6.791 at 202.91 mph while Geoffrion had a 6.780 at 203.61 mph.

Geoffrion stepped up in his final qualifying run Saturday, running 4.768 at 203.71. It was his best qualifying effort since Hurley Blakeney's Nitro Fish Ford Escort ZX2 made its debut seven races ago.

Crew chief Eric Luzinski said he had struggled getting the right car setups during qualifying. "But now it looks like we have those problems under control," he added. "Now we'll go on to the next project and fix our first-round results."

Geoffrion is seventh in NHRA POWERade points with 412. He returns to action at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals, June 13-15, at Columbus, Ohio.
