"I got the Redlight Blues!"
JOLIET, IL 6/2 "I knew we were going to need a good Reaction Time," said Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk following a first round at Route 66 Raceway, "so I pressed the Tree. I just pushed it a little harder than I'd planned. Bruce (Allen) had consistently better elapsed times than we'd had with our Summit Racing Pontiac during qualifying, so I knew we needed whatever advantage we could get. I just didn't mean to push it that hard!"
Pawuk's foul start in the first round was his first such error in a long, long time. "I've felt like I haven't been pushing the Tree enough in the last few races," he added, "so I made the conscious decision to try a bit harder.
"I think I've figured it out now. We've gone from being too slow off the line to being too quick, so by the time the Pontiac Excitement Nationals presented by Summit Racing rolls around in two weeks I oughta be perfect!"
This coming Saturday, June 8, Pawuk and his Pontiac Grand Am will participate in SuperSummit X, the largest independent gathering of Street Rods, Street Machines and race cars in Northern Ohio. The one-day affair takes place at Summit Racing Equipment headquarters in Tallmadge, a suburb of Akron just off Interstate 76.
"This is our 10th Anniversary of racing for Summit," said Pawuk, "and it's also the 10th Anniversary of SuperSummit, which is kind of cool.
"The thing I like about SuperSummit is that I've got plenty of time to visit with people without worrying about the next round of qualifying or eliminations. For us it's really a chance to kick back and really spend some quality time with our fans and teammates. Because of our racing schedules, and where they pit us at the national events, SuperSummit is one of the few times we get to visit with the rest of the guys, so it's a lot of fun for us.
"But, right after that's over its back to work, 'cause we're determined to be as ready as possible for the race next weekend. I think we've been making progress, but it isn't coming quickly enough to suit me. We need to start winning, and we need to start doing it now, not later!"
