JOLIET, Ill. - After fighting tire shake problems at his past two events, Federal Mogul Funny Car pilot Marc White will return to "sweet home Chicago" for this weekend's Lucas Oil Products Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside Chicago. After field stripping the car to the bare chassis, and carefully inspecting every part, White and team feel they have a handle on their tire shake problems, and hope to pick up their first win of the year in front of White's hometown fans.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, qualified No. 1 here at the Division 3 opener in April with a 5.68 second elapsed time in the Etterman Racing 2001 Firebird, but lost due to tire shake in the semifinal round. Two weeks ago in Indianapolis at the Division 3 race No. 2, White fought steering problems along with tireshake. The steering problem was linked to a bent steering arm, and White feels after thorough examination of the run data, he has a handle on the tire shake problem.
"Definitely the game plan is to get this car to run a little bit better than it has the last couple of races," said White. "We've been struggling, but we've been working real hard, so I'm sure we'll get it turned around. Right now the weather is pretty cool, so if it stays that way through the weekend, everybody ought to be able to run pretty well."
White also strives to put the problems of his last two races behind him, and concentrate on the race at hand.
"As a driver it doesn't bother me that much," explained White. "I know that if we have the right tune-up on the car, it's one of the fastest cars in the country. So, we just have to be more attentive to what the car is telling us, and quit trying to tell it what to do. The car tells you what it wants, we just have to be smart enough to listen to it. If we do the right things, everything takes care of itself."
"As far as driving the car," continued White, "it is what it is. You just have to get in it and go. You can't be worried about what it is going to run. You just drive it as hard as you can every run. As they say, 'drive it like you stole it."
White also hopes to return to his early season 5.6 - 5.7 second elapsed times this weekend as well.
"If the weather cooperates, I'm sure that the potential will be there to run 5.60's, but I think the key is to find a way to run mid 5.70's, and that ought to get you to the final round," commented White. "If you can do that, I think you will be in pretty good shape. It's nice to run .60's, but being a little more consistent than we have been is definitely the way to win races."
Qualifying will begin at 11:30 a.m. for the Federal Mogul Funny Cars with another session following at 2:30 p.m.
