JOLIET, Ill., September 28, 2002 -- Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. put up their best elapsed times of the season during qualifying for Sunday's Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Capps' Green Skoal Racing Camaro was timed in 4.817 seconds, 308.21 mph during his final run Saturday and he moved into sixth. Capps faces Tim Wilkerson, No. 10, 4.856 at 305.98 mph, in the first round. Johnson, meanwhile, had a 4.842 best at 308.57 mph to wind up 10th. His first-round foe is Gary Densham, No. 7, 4.821 at 312.87.

Capps said his run could've been better "but the car spun the tires and the engine dropped a couple cylinders. I should've run about 316 mph."

Consistency was a key part of Johnson's Blue Skoal Racing machine. He had runs of 4.897 and 4.906 Saturday to get ready for competition.
