JOLIET, Ill., September 29, 2002 - Ron Capps made it three straight victories over Tommy Johnson Jr. in the semifinal battle of Skoal Racing teammates Sunday in the Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals at Route 66 Raceway but he couldn't get past Tony Pedregon in the finals.
Capps, the No. 6 qualifier and driver of the Skoal Racing Camaro Funny Car, did give Pedregon a good fight until near half-track when the car did two wheelstands, forcing him to get off the throttle and watch Pedregon get the win light.
"The front end came up quickly," he said. "The car was just beginning to make its move when the front end came up so high that it flat-spotted and bent the wheelie bar when it came down. I was in front of him at the time."
Also included in Capps' performance was a quarterfinal victory over his nemesis, John Force. Both cars experienced problems, but Capps got there first with a 4.954 at 303.16 mph to Force's 5.006 at 304.46.
"Our car ran well. It was a good weekend, but . . ." concluded Capps, who qualified sixth with a 4.817 at 308.21 mph.
Johnson, meanwhile, was disappointed that his Blue Skoal Racing Camaro couldn't drive past his teammate. "We didn't go very far before the tires started smoking against Ron," Johnson pointed out. "That was the third time I've smoked the tires against him."
Johnson had three good qualifying runs, the best a 4.842 at 308.57 that left him 10th. He beat Gary Densham with a 4.920 and Bob Bode with a 4.882 before losing traction against Capps.
Johnson managed to move into eighth place in POWERade Series points with 933. Capps is seventh at 999, 26 behind Scotty Cannon.
The next event is the O'Reilly Nationals, Oct. 11-13, at Ennis, Texas.
