Capps beat Johnson in battle of Skoal Racing Teammates
JOLIET, Ill., Sept. 28, 2003 - Ron Capps won the Skoal Racing battle of teammates against Tommy Johnson in the first round to keep his hold on sixth place Sunday at the CarQuest Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Capps, driving the Don Prudhomme-owned Green Camaro, crossed the finish line first with a time of 4.875 seconds at 322.04 mph while Johnson's Blue Camaro was slowed by tire shake to a 7.903 at 106.35.
John Force eliminated Capps in the quarterfinals when Capps' car smoked the tires.
"It was unfortunate we had to race Tommy in the first round," said Capps. "We race, no matter what. My car shook the tires hard and it almost shook my foot off the pedal but then it took off and ran the 4.87 at 322. It was awesome feeling how much horsepower (crew chief) Todd (Okuhara) is making. It was a pretty productive day. We were surprised the tires smoked against Force, but Todd is still fine-tuning the combination."
"Unfortunately for us, we had the same problem that has been bothering us for a while - tire shake," said Johnson, who qualified seventh to Capps' 10th. "Mike (Green, crew chief) tried two totally different ways of getting around the tire shake at about 1.2 seconds and got the same results. The car runs good when the tune-up is right on the money, but we can't be off a little because it shakes the tires. We will get it figured out."
Johnson left the line first, .042 to .057, but couldn't hold off Capps once the tires lost traction. It was Capps's fifth win in seven meetings between the two teammates.
Capps has 999 points and Johnson 931 with four races remaining in the NHRA POWERade Series. The first one comes Saturday with the completion of the rain-interrupted Lucas Oil Nationals at Reading, Pa. Two qualifying runs Saturday will be followed by eliminations Sunday.
