Whisnant Is 16th in Chicago

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Tomorrow at the third annual Car Quest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Chicago, Ill Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier will race from the 16th spot on the Pro Stock eliminations ladder. It was in the second session of qualifying where Whisnant ran 6.794 / 202.94 mph to end his qualifying dry spell

"It's about time," said Whisnant of Stockbridge, Ga. "We knew that it would come, but it never comes fast enough when you are on the outside looking in."

"This team is in the middle of rebuilding. After the race in Sonoma, we felt like the season was a wash for us, and that we needed to concentrate our efforts on next season. We made changes within the crew and with our motor program. We hired Julius Hughes as crew chief and got to work.

"Mentally we knew that we would not start qualifying right away, but it is still a hard thing for the racers in us to take. We come here to race on Sunday, not go home on Saturday.

"It is very gratifying to see that our hard work is starting to pay off. We still have a long way to go, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel and that feels good.

"Tomorrow morning we have Greg Anderson in round 1. That is a big dragon to slay, but it is not impossible. Races are won and lost on the starting line. I will need to be on my game tomorrow to get past him. A tough job, but not impossible."

Eliminations at the third annual Car Quest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals will begin at 11:00 AM CST on Sunday Sept. 28.
