Whisnant exits in round 1

JOLIET, Ill. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet Cavalier, entered eliminations at the 2nd Annual Craftsman 75th Anniversary NHRA Nationals holding the 9th position on the Pro Stock ladder.

For the fourth time this season, Whisnant met fellow Georgian Kurt Johnson in Round 1. Johnson extended his win record over Whisnant when Whisnant gave the race away on the starting with a red light. Johnson ran a 6.900 / 200.80 mph to Whisnant's red lighting 6.897 / 200.02 mph.

"I'm very disappointed," said Whisnant. "I had a great racecar, but I also knew I had to be good on the tree to get past Kurt. I gave that race away, and I'm not happy about it.

"We are going to go home, and head right to the test track. We will work on the car and the driver, and be back in Dallas to try again."

The next race on the 2002 POWERade NHRA Drag Racing series will be the 17th Annual O'Reilly Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec in Dallas Texas Oct. 10-13.
