Herbert's 4.518 holds up for his first NHRA no. 1 qualifying spot.
JOLIET, Ill., September 28, 2002 - Doug Herbert and his Snap-on Racing team were smiling Saturday night after Herbert claimed his first No. 1 Top Fuel qualifying position in NHRA competition in the Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Herbert's career-best run of 4.518 seconds at 324.59 mph on Friday night held up to the challenges of the other drivers, giving the Cherryville, N.C. driver the top starting spot in his 190th NHRA event. "I've been the No. 2 qualifier quite a few times, and being the No. 1 qualifier is stout. Conditions were just incredible and the track was great. It has been a great weekend so far. Now we just need to top if off tomorrow."
As befitting his position, Herbert will square off against Luigi Novelli, the No. 16 starter who qualified with a 4.763 at 311.49 mph.
Herbert said his final qualifying lap Saturday might've been as good as his Friday run but the blower belt broke with about 400 feet left. "According to the incremental numbers, we were going to run a 4.52 or 4.51 before the belt broke," added Herbert, who coasted to the finish line with a 4.624 at 269.35 mph. "We were running faster at half track, 271 mph, than we were at the finish line."
Herbert has now run 4.5-second times in his last three visits to Route 66 Raceway. His previous career best was 4.542 seconds, from his last visit in June.
