JOLIET, Ill. - Just a few months ago, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver David Wells and his "Plain Vanilla" team were standing in the Route 66 Raceway Winner's Circle after winning the Division 3 event there earlier in the year. The Blue Bunny Ice Cream team will be trying to work their way to that spot once again during this weekend's NHRA Nationals being held there, just outside of Chicago.
Wells, who helps to run the family's ice cream plant in LeMars, Iowa, enters this weekend's event on the heels of clinching his third Division 5 Championship at last weekend's Division 5 event in Denver, when last year's Champ Bruce Bowler did not qualify.
"We're a little hopped up because of winning the Division Championship," said Wells. "The weather is going to be cool, and there is going to be a bunch of cars here. We hope the weather stays cool, even though the A/Fuel cars will have the advantage again. We'll just do the best we can, and see how it goes, round by round."
While Wells has had a strong year on the divisional level, with three wins and a runner-up, the team has struggled at national events due to parts breakage, and in some cases, just plain bad luck. Wells not only wants to win this weekend, but wants to solidify his spot as a top five contender.
"We're just going to try to get the car up where it belongs," said Wells. "This car should be in the top five, we just haven't got it there. We've had a bunch of parts failures here and there, and the parts breakage is killing us. It's nothing that we have done wrong, typically, it's just things that have happened. We haven't really done much on the national level, except for Brainerd where we went to the semi's. If we can just go three or four rounds at the next races, we'll be ok. We are going to try to go to the last three or four races, if I can physically get the truck where we need to."
