"Cool" key word for Baca at Chicago
JOLIET, Ill. (September 29, 2004) -- The predicted "cool" weather at this weekend's NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals has David Baca, driver of the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster, smiling.
"I love that word 'cool,'" said Baca. "Whatever the reason, this hot rod always seems to run better when it's cool. Hot sticky tracks have not been kind to us this season. Cool will be the key to our success at Chicago."
Last year, at the two events held at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., a short drive from downtown Chicago, Baca qualified fifth at both races. He recorded an elapsed time of 4.561 seconds at 325.30 mph in the spring race and followed that up with a qualifying time of 4.508 seconds at 321.12 mph in the fall.
At the spring race in May of this season, Baca once again qualified fifth with a pass of 4.529 seconds at 329.91 mph. Of course, that was before NHRA lowered the amount of nitro methane fuel mixture percentage from 90-percent to 85- percent.
"The Route 66 track has always been quick and fast and with those 'cool' temperatures that have been predicted, this weekend should be no exception. Even with the lower nitro amount, I think numbers will be near what we've run here in the past. Times and speeds are going to surprise everybody. I can't wait to get started," added Baca.
Although he has run a limited schedule this year, entering the CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals Baca is No. 14 in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings with 519 points.
