Baca turned back in opening round

JOLIET, Ill. (October 3, 2004) -- Although not as cool as yesterday, it was another cool day as eliminations got underway for the NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals.

In the opening round, David Baca, who qualified No. 8, faced Bob Vandergriff, Jr., the No. 9 qualifier. Vandergriff was away first at the green light, with the pair running near identical times down the quarter mile. Vandergriff crossed the finish line slightly ahead of Baca. Baca recorded an elapsed time of 4.583 seconds while Vandergriff stopped the clocks in 4.587 seconds.

The margin of victory was 28 thousandth of a second.

"That was a close one," said Baca. "The crew did their job, the driver didn't. We had a pretty good car this weekend but didn't take advantage of our set up. We're still working on next year and will move to Las Vegas and continue our preparations."

The next race for David Baca and the D. Baca & Family Top Fuel Dragster is the fourth annual NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, October 28-31.

In addition, Baca is in the running for the wild card spot in the Budweiser Shootout, a special race-within-a-race, held in conjunction with the ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals. The drawing for the wild card spot will be held Thursday evening, October 28, at The Joint at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas.
